Hurricane Recovery

Replacement Planned for I-10 / Escambia Bay Bridge
Photograph showing I-10 Escambia Bay Bridge open again to traffic after Hurricane Ivan. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has awarded a $243 million construction contract to replace the storm-damaged I-10/Escambia Bay Bridge structures. Contractors Tidewater Skanska and Flatiron Constructors (TSI/FCI) are partnering with the design firm Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade and Douglas (PGQD) to rebuild the bridges that connect Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties. More information on the Escambia Bay Bridge Replacement project can be found at http://www.escambiabaybridge.com.

Preliminary construction activities began in May 2005, with actual construction planned to begin in August 2005. Construction will take place parallel to and south of the existing bridge(s). The new, three-lane eastbound bridge will be completed first, and be followed by a new, three-lane westbound bridge.

Eastbound traffic is expected to be shifted off the existing, single-lane, temporary bridge to the newly constructed bridge in August 2006. Westbound traffic will be shifted to the same bridge three months later while workers complete the westbound structure. All work on the new 3.17 mile stretch of bridges, including work on the currently closed Scenic Highway ramps, is expected to be completed by August 2007.

In the interim, two lanes will continue to be open westbound and one in an eastbound direction. Westbound trucks are restricted to the right lane, and the speed limit on both bridges has been reduced to 40 mph. Temporary weigh-in-motion stations, one on either side of the bridge, are weighing trucks to ensure overweight vehicles do not cause additional damage to the bridge structures.

Westbound oversize and overweight permit trucks should use the following detour:

Westbound Oversize and Overweight Permit Trucks
Exit I-10 at SR 87 (Exit 31)
North on SR 87 to US 90
West on US 90 to SR 87
North on SR 87 to SR 89
North on SR 89 to SR 4
West on SR 4 to US 29
South on US 29 to US 90A
West on US 90A to I-10 (Exit 5)

Eastbound Oversize and Overweight Permit Trucks
Exit I-10 at US 29 North (Exit 10B)
North on US 29 to SR 4
East on SR 4 to SR 89
South on SR 89 to SR 87
South on SR 87 to US 90
East on US 90 to SR 87
