Diagram of Fairfield Drive on-ramp, currently under construction. The Fairfield Drive on-ramp to I-110 northbound is being reconstructed and is temporarily closed. Access to I-110 northbound is now available by traveling one block south to the new Davis Highway on-ramp to I-110.

Flyover Ramp Now Open
Aerial photograph of new flyover ramp.Construction crews have completed the finishing touches on the new flyover ramp at the I-10/110 interchange.

The flyover ramp carries Interstate 10 westbound traffic up and over the I-10 eastbound lanes and on to Interstate 110 southbound. The flyover ramp, combined with the six laning of I-10 between Davis Highway (Exit 13) and U.S. Highway 29 (Exit 10) and improvements to the I-10/Davis Highway interchange are improving mobility and enhancing safety for Pensacola’s “northern gateway.”

Protecting the Environment
Photograph showing an environmental protection effort. The work on Interstates 10 and 110 demonstrates the FDOT’s commitment to environmental stewardship. More than $180 million of construction upgrades are underway and project officials are working diligently to help safeguard the environment.

“Erosion control is very important,” said Dominic Richard, the FDOT construction project manager. “We’re serious and are making every effort to protect adjacent creeks and streams from storm water run-off.”

A variety of erosion control methods are employed on the interstate projects. These include silt fences, turbidity barriers and sand bags. The team has also used items like silt savers, rock dams, flocculation blocks and grass “hydro-seeding.” Storm water run-off frequently contains petrochemical contaminants. The erosion control measures, coupled with the new retention ponds, help ensure that storm water isn’t discharged directly into adjacent waterways.

The district is also working closely with state and local officials to ensure the matter of erosion control receives sufficient attention. Monthly field reviews are held with representatives of FDOT, Volkert, the CEI consultant, Archer-Western Contractors, Ltd., the construction contractor, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the City of Pensacola and Escambia County. The field reviews bring all interested parties together to review progress on the projects.

“Meeting with these parties fosters a positive atmosphere and helps identify problems early,” said Richard. “Together we can develop and implement workable solutions. Pensacola is our home and we’re going to take care of it.”

FDOT Service Patrol Keeps Traffic Moving
Photograph showing service patrol vehicles parked in median of roadway. The FDOT Service Patrol is at work on behalf of motorists traveling the construction zone(s) on I-10 and I-110. The free service, operated by G.E. Deyo Corporation, provides a professional operator with a fully equipped tow truck Monday through Friday between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., Saturday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., and Sunday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The Service Patrol removes disabled and/or abandoned vehicles from the highways and shoulders of the road so that travel lanes can remain open. It is not intended as a substitute for commercial towing and wrecker operations and service is limited to moving disabled/abandoned vehicles to a safe location.

The Service Patrol is part of FDOT's continuing efforts to assist the motoring public during the construction work on Escambia County’s interstate highways.
